Honestly, I don't even know where to start. I think I may have been in labor for two weeks prior to delivery. At my 37th week Dr. appointment, I had dilated 2cm. (And, I was told, my bag of waters was 'bulging') Hmm, bulging?! OK, so then this is really it?! I could go at any minute. Boy, was I wrong! Fast forward to my 39th week check-up....dilated to 4cm. I am going to go into labor any second now. Nope. Wrong again.
So since my due date was fast approaching I had scheduled a non-stress test and ultrasound for the following Tuesday. Just to make sure the baby was doing OK in there. I told my Dr (and everyone in the office for that matter) that I hoped I wouldn't see them again...at least until my 6 week postpartum check-up). After that, we would probably schedule an induction. Oh darn! I was really hoping that nature would take it's course just like it had with Arden. I was a bit disappointed, but none-the-less, it was CLOSE! No matter how he arrived in the world, I just wanted him to be healthy. The excitement was mounting.
April 9th, 2011 - 3:20a.m.: I was sound asleep. I was actually getting a decent night sleep considering it was very uncomfortable at this point to do anything, especially sleep. I felt a contraction. Was this it?! No, I thought. This little guy is making us wait. I fell back asleep and wouldn't you know it, 10-15 minutes later I felt another one. I thought to myself, "I will just get up, watch the clock and then I'll wake Dean if I have another one." Eight minutes later, another one. OK, this IS it! I did the stereotypical thing and woke Dean by telling him: "Honey, it's time." He jumped out of bed and started to get things ready while I took a shower and packed the rest of my bags. I really don't know what I was thinking taking a shower. It was precious time that I needed to get to the hospital. Little did I know. I really thought I had more time. Wrong again.
As soon as my mom came over (4:15a.m.) we raced out the door. The contractions were now coming at an alarming rate: every 3-4 minutes. On the way to the hospital they were coming every 2 minutes. Uh oh! "I need to push!!!", I told Dean. Then I told him to speed....FAST!
Upon arriving at the hospital and up to the labor & delivery floor, you could hear me coming a mile away. I actually used the breathing techniques I had learned 3 years prior when I was preparing to have Arden (which I didn't use then!). "Hooo, Hooo, Heee" They were my best friend at this point and REALLY helped me get through the painful contractions. I got into my gown and they checked my cervix. I was 10cm and really ready to push. "Where's the Dr?!?! Get someone in here because I am ready to push!" Within 5 minutes, the mid-wife arrived and put her gear on and we were ready to go! I hadn't even had time to get an IV of fluids inserted. No time for an epidural, no time for an IV and certainly no time to waste! He was coming!
Five or so pushes later at 5:46 a.m., my little bundle of joy entered the world and he was beautiful! Absolutely perfect from head to toe. Anderson Dean Marshall is now a part of our family and we are blessed. I am so grateful for my wonderful, supportive husband, my darling Arden and now, my sweet boy Anderson. Can life get any better?! Nope, it cannot.
